Media Debates

"CELEBRITIES HAVE TOO MUCH INFLUENCE IN SOCIETY"

Certain people, e.g. older people (60+) would agree with this statement because growing up, their lifestyles were very different to ours and so they would have a biased opinion. As teenagers and young adults, they had less ways of accessing the media and the lives of celebrities and so they would not have been as influenced by celebrities as young people are today. They would think celebrities have too much influence because they're only used to the amount of influence they had when they were younger, which wasn't very much compared to the contact and influence celebrities have with young people nowadays. Now that there are more ways to access the lives of celebrities, people can see more of the lifestyles of celebrities and because they display them for the whole world to see, young people decide to copy it because they like their lifestyles.

Other people e.g. young people (11-25) would disagree with this because it puts labels on them saying that they have been influenced too much by celebrities and although some celebrities are harmless and send positive messages to society, there are other celebrities who are caught up in drugs and negative things and so this makes young people look like bad people and so they would disagree with it to get rid of that negative label that other people give them.

  2. Sophie, you've made some interesting and valid points here. What I'd like to see now (you can add it as a comment below this) is more of a media focus, particularly with examples. What is it that has changed between older generations and younger generations? Is it the quantity? Technology? Quality? I think there's probably an argument to say that while we have 100s of TV channels now the overall quality may have dropped and a lot of TV these days is pretty poor celebrity based programming. But that's just my opinion!
