TV News Summer Project (part 6)

This is part 6 of my TV News Summer Project

Thursday 24th July - BBC Breakfast, 8:00-8:20

The main news stories and the order they were broadcast in were:

1. Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and introduction to first day of events to take place today.
2. Philip Hammond is talking to the Israeli Leader about the Gaza conflict.
3. There is a review of the execution process of an inmate after he took 2 hours to die when it should have taken 10 minutes.
4. It's been alleged that police spied on the family of a 20 year old murder victim whose mother was campaigning for an inquiry into his death.
5. UK investigators are looking at the Black Box recorder from the Malaysian plane crash.
6. MP says he has 'deep regret' for actions that led to common assault on his ex partner earlier this year.

I think that story 1 came first because the Commonwealth Games is almost as important and exciting for the public as the Olympics or the World Cup and it's even more exciting than usual because it's being held this year in Glasgow, in Scotland, in the UK. Story 2 is a little bit different than what they usually talk about when it comes to the Gaza conflict and I think this is because people might be getting a bit distressed and worried by the rising death toll and so I think the BBC thought that the public deserved a bit of a break from all the talk/details about the death and fighting and that they deserved to hear something a bit less frightening/death related. The next 2 stories are interesting because they are stories that haven't been broadcast yet so the risk of the public getting bored of hearing the same stories over and over again would decrease. Story 5, focusing on the Malaysian plane crash is the penultimate story because there haven't been many developments/other crashes/deaths since the plane crashed and so there wouldn't be anything worth reporting before any of the first 4 stories. Finally, story 6 is reported now for similar reasons as stories 3 and 4, mainly because it's a new story that we haven't heard yet so for that reason, more people will watch it.

TV News Summer Project (part 5)

This is part 5 of my TV News Summer Project

Wednesday 23rd July - BBC Breakfast, 8:00 - 8:20

The main stories for this day and the order they were broadcast on were:

1. Final preparations are underway for the opening of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
2. The first bodies from the Malaysian air crash are being taken to the Netherlands for identification.
3. Since the plane crash, hardly any arms deals between the UK and Russia have been cancelled.
4. In the conflict between Palestine and Israel, the death toll is continuing to rise. 600 Palestinians and 30 Israelis dead.
5. A group of MPs are calling for changes to the disabilities benefits system.
6. Costa Concordia is still being removed from the sea where it sank in January 2013.

I think that it's interesting that the stories about the disasters in the world have been broadcast after the story on the Commonwealth Games and I think this is because the BBC are trying to get a head start in raising viewing figures for the opening of the Commonwealth Games so by telling the public about the opening a day before it starts reminds the public to watch it. Stories 2, 3 and 4 are broadcast next because they are global disasters that have happened in the last few days and some people in the UK will have friends and relatives that may be involved so they would want to know of any updates and the rising death toll in the case of story 4. I think story 5 is next because it only applies to citizens in the UK and there is also a very large amount of people in the UK who are on benefits and so they would be very, very interested in this story and the changes in the benefits system. I think story 6 is last because the issue happened over a year ago but some people may have been wondering what had happened to the ship since it sank and so the BBC thought it would be good to update us on what was going on.

TV News Summer Project (part 4)

This is part 4 of my TV News Summer Project

Tuesday 22nd July - BBC Breakfast, 8:00 - 8:20

The main stories that were broadcast on that day and in this order were:

1-Rebels in Eastern Ukraine hand over the Black Box flight recorders about the Malaysian plane crash.
2-More than 100,000 Palestinians have been forced from their homes and 580 Palestinians have been killed.
3-After 13 years, Nato troops are preparing to pull out of Afghanistan. During their time there, an estimated 13,000 Afghan soldiers and 453 British servicemen have died - but the experiences of British and Afghan widows differ dramatically.
4-Prince George celebrates his 1st birthday with a party and a trip to London Zoo.
5-The number of jellyfish in British waters could hit a record high this year, according to researchers.

I think the stories were broadcast in this order because the first 3 stories are very serious global matters and so they would grab the attention of viewers, therefore boosting viewing figures. Also, it makes people more aware of the situations happening around the world, especially story 1 which could also act as a warning to people that Malaysian airlines aren't currently safe to travel on. The 3rd story could cause relief around the world, now that they know that the troops are pulling out which means no more fighting and potential loss of life/family members. This happiness continues into the last 2 stories which are stories that aren't going to cause panic or distress to any viewers so it leaves them feeling much more relaxed and in a better mood because if they finished the news with one of the first 2 stories then they would go away into the rest of their day worrying about those stories and how they would affect them/the world and because they're the main public interest stories.

TV News Summer Project (part 3)

This is part 3 of my TV News Summer Project

I think that the target audience for Breakfast is mainly adults, however, there may be some news stories that they decide to put in their in order to interest young people/children. Some may even be able to relate to the news stories and so as a result they want to watch it. I think that the gender percentage would be 50% Male and 50% female because there are news stories (in my opinion) that can grab the attention of both genders, for example, sporting stories to interest males and other genres of stories to interest females. I think that the highest age group watching the news would be middle aged-elderly people as some elderly people are housebound which means that they can't get their own experience or develop their own opinion of the outside world and so they rely solely on the news. However I think that that would mainly apply to elderly women because elderly men might prefer to read the newspaper as that is what they're accustomed to. Furthermore I think more upper class people would prefer to read the newspaper aswell, rather than watching the television. Also, I think less people who have higher class, hectic, busy jobs would watch the news and prefer newspapers because they have less time to watch the TV and so it would be so much easier to grab a newspaper and read it on the train as they go to work.

TV News Summer Project (part 2)

This is part 2 of my TV News Summer Project

The programme BBC Breakfast is broadcast on BBC 1, a channel which was launched on the 20th April 1964 although it still existed in 1936, when it had a different name, BBC Television Service. It was called that until 1960, and then BBC TV until 1964, when it was changed to BBC One, and it has stayed that way ever since. The channel is owned by the BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation and it is famous/well known for broadcasting the News and documentaries.

This is the channel logo

Its sister channels are: BBC two, BBC three, BBC four, BBC Parliament, BBC news, CBBC, and Cbeebies. CBBC and Cbeebies are channels specifically for children.

The most watched program ever on BBC one was Eastenders, the episode shown on Christmas Day, 1986.

This is the trailer for the investigation drama series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson. This show is also shown on BBC 1.

TV News Summer Project (part 1)

This is part 1 of my TV News Summer Project.

The TV News programme I decided to research was BBC Breakfast which is broadcast on BBC 1, 7 days a week. From Monday to Friday it runs from 6:00 until 9:15, however on Thursday 24th of July it will run from 6:00 until 9:00 as a result of the start of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. On Saturday it runs from 6:00 until 10:00 because more less people are awake before 9:15 as they like to sleep in on a Saturday so they broadcast it for longer. On Sunday it runs from 6:00 until 9:00.

There are currently 9 presenters of BBC Breakfast and they are: Bill Turnbull who presents the main news in the news studio, Charlie Stayt who does the same thing as Bill Turnbull on different days, Louise Minchin who usually presents the news with either Bill Turnbull or Charlie Stayt, Carol Kirkwood who always presents the weather, Stephanie McGovern who presents the Business and Economics news stories, Mike Bushell and Sally Nugent who present sport, Naga Munchetty who presents stories to do with money and figures, and Jon Kay, who presents Breakfast on Saturday mornings.

The average viewing figures for BBC Breakfast are currently 6.8 million daily.

In March 2006, the programme received the TRIC award for Best Daytime Television Programme for the 3rd year in a row.

This is the programme's logo and appears after the intro has finished.

This the video showing the opening titles to BBC News in general, not just Breakfast.

Music Artist Advertisement #2

This is my landscape advertisement for a new music artist. I used black and white to enhance the gothic, rock side to it and used an effect behind the name and extra information to make it look like an angelic glow but also quite ghostly.

Music Artist Advertisement

This is my portrait advertisement for a music artist. I chose the genre of 'Rock' hence the choice of clothing in the photo and the name of the artist and the name of the album.

HSBC 3 images 1 word

These are my 3 images all described by 1 word, advertising HSBC. I think the word 'Love' fits for all these images because for the first one, the couple are clearly in a relationship, and the smiles on their faces suggest that they are both happy and it reinforces the love in their relationship. The second image shows a mother telling off her child. I believe love is shown in this image because all she is doing is making sure that her child behaves himself and telling him right from wrong so he doesn't make bad mistakes in the future, and that is because she loves him. Finally, the third image is piles of money and I think love is shown in this image too because loads of people think that you need money to be happy and successful and so people have the same love for money that they do for their family members and friends.

TV news broadcast questions :D

1) What were the five stories your group chose to broadcast?

Greenford news story:
Exams finished

National news story:
Palestinian teenage body found in Jerusalem

London news story: Man dies in online Punch4Punch game.

Sports news story
: Suarez has been signed for Barcelona.

Funny news story: Bench from The Fault in Our Stars gets stolen.

2) For each story above, explain WHY you chose that particular story and not something else. Why would it interest a Greenford audience?

Greenford news story: We chose this story because…it reminds the students at GHS that the summer is coming and they don't have to worry about exams for ages.

National news story: We chose this story because…the person involved is what every student at GHS is now-a teenager and it makes us think that it isn't just adults that these awful things happen to and makes us realise how many stories we hear about children/teenagers dying or being kidnapped.

London news story: We chose this story because…his death has been left as 'unexplained' so it leaves us wondering what the real cause of his death was.

Sports news story: We chose this story because…Suarez has been talked about for so long about all his biting incidents and so to hear something quite different about him should capture people's attention because it makes us realise that he isn't just a biting machine, he needs to have some positive recognition too.

Funny news story: We chose this story because…TFIOS is a massive teen hit at the moment and so to hear even something small about this phenomenon will capture people's attention.

3) What order did you broadcast the stories in? Why did you place the stories in that order?

We broadcasted the GHS story first because the information given wasn't crucial and so if people missed it, they would have been upset but not too disappointed so would want to continue watching. We broadcasted the London story next for similar reasons but we felt that more people would be watching now so this story was our next choice to broadcast. We then broadcasted the National news because we felt that this was when the majority of viewers would be watching and so this was the most important news to be broadcasting at that time. We then broadcasted the sports news because it was a good way to heighten the viewers' spirits and give them a source of entertainment. Finally we broadcasted the funny news story again for similar reasons, as a way to entertain viewers and put them in a good mood before watching their next television show.

Now think about your writing, editing, broadcasting and group work.

4) How did you make sure the script was the right length?

In order to make sure our script was the right length, we timed the broadcaster reading the news report before he broadcasted it for real, cutting and adding vital bits as we went.

5) How did you make sure each story was clear and easy to understand?

We used formal language to ensure that viewers would take the news seriously but we also tried to make it not complicated to ensure that younger viewers would understand what was being spoken about.

6) How did you make sure the broadcast was professional?

Similarly to before, we used formal language to not only make ourselves sound professional, but to make other people aware that we were being professional.

7) What was your specific role in the group?

I wrote the script.

8) Rate your group’s ability to work collaboratively out of 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent)

I would rate our group 4/5 because we did work really well together but we could have been a bit more communicative.

9) How could your group have worked more effectively as a team?

As I mentioned just now, I think that we could have been more communicative and spoken more about our decisions we made.

10) Finally, what would you have done differently if you were given the opportunity to do this again?

If we were to do this again, I would have made the script a bit longer, and added more details to each news story (but not too many details as it was only 60 seconds). I also would have had more rehearsals to read the report over and over again.

Video analysis

This is the theatrical trailer for the 1999 film 'the Sixth Sense' starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment and Toni Colette.

Genre: the genre for this film is mainly psychological, supernatural thriller with some element of horror included too.

Audience: the target audience for this film is most probably teenagers and adults (13 - 50) who enjoy being thrilled by scary films. Also, Bruce Willis is a very well known actor so another part of the audience may be fans of Bruce Willis and his work. Furthermore this movie could evoke interest in people who are interested in the supernatural world. The gender percentage I think would be 50/50 for both males and females because there is no element of the movie aiming to please a specific gender.

Platform: there are many ways that people are able to view this movie including: the TV, DVD, movie sites (which tend to be illegal), the cinema (both the trailer and the full length film) and also, recently, I found the movie on youtube, so that is another way of accessing it.

This is the music video to 5 Seconds of Summer's 'She Looks So Perfect' released in March 2014.

Genre: The genre of this media text is clearly a music video and it features electric guitars, suggesting that the music is of the pop/rock genre.

Audience: I think the audience of this video would definitely be young teenage girls or pre-teen girls with the age range of 11 - 18 years old. I can hardly imagine males enjoying this kind of genre of music, especially when the majority of the lyrics are about how perfect a girl is in the boy's mind, e.g. "You look so perfect standing there, in my American Apparel underwear" and I hardly think they're singing about a boy. Therefore, I am of the opinion that the majority of people listening to this music, and watching this music video will be young, teenage girls.

Platform: Ways you can watch this video include via YouTube on devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and TV on music channels.

This is a video showing the front seat point of view on the Green Lantern roller coaster in Six Flags adventure park, New Jersey.

Genre: the genre of this video is entertainment and also it's advertising this roller coaster from the front seat point of view.

Audience: the main audience I think that would be watching this is people who are trying to find good roller coasters in good theme parks where they can go. Also, thrill seekers who enjoy the thrill of roller coasters who just want a virtual experience without going to the actual place. The gender I think is equally male and female, with the age range of 10 - 45 because you have to take into account the fact that middle aged people may have health problems that may restrict them from boarding this kind of roller coaster.

Platform: the ways you can watch this video are primarily on YouTube on any electrical device such as smartphones, tablets, computers etc. But the full experience is available at the place where it is being advertised from. Six Flags adventure park, New Jersey.
